Vivo needs GSM network

6 Jan 2006

CDMA mobile operator Brasilcel, which operates under the banner Vivo, should look into the possibility of overlaying a GSM network on its current network to keep up with its competitors, according to a report in financial paper Valor Economico. A GSM overlay would cost Vivo between USD1.5 billion and USD4 billion. Although Vivo remains the country’s largest operator with around 29 million customers at the end of 2005, it saw its market share fall from 40.5% at the end of 2004 to 35.4% eleven months later, a trend which looks likely to continue in the face of increased competition.
