Smart to launch payphone business

5 Jan 2006

The Philippines’ largest mobile operator Smart Communications has received permission from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to launch a public payphone business. The operator, which claimed around 20 million subscribers at the end of 2005, plans to invest PLP177 million (USD3.4 million) in the installation of 9,600 payphones nationwide, of which 7,100 will be card phones and 2,500 coin phones. Rollout will begin later this year. Rival payphone operator Cruz Telephone Company opposed Smart’s application but was overruled.
