Competition looms

5 Jan 2006

Slovakia’s former monopoly fixed line operator Slovak Telecom has now signed interconnection deals with eight rivals, clearing the way for increased competition in the wireline market in 2006. According to PwC, Slovak Telecom has opened its networks to rival operators eTel, Amtel, Zeleznicne Telekomunikacie, Dial Telekom, GlobalTel, SlovaNet, Nextra and GTS. eTel was the first company to physically interconnect with the incumbent’s networks in July last year. Slovak Telecom is currently 51% owned by Deutsche Telekom, with the remainder under state control; the government is expected to complete the telco’s privatisation some time this year.
