Anatel signs concession contracts

23 Dec 2005

Brazilian telecoms regulator Anatel has signed new 20-year STFC concession contracts with Embratel, Telemar, Brasil Telecom, CTBC Telecom, Sercomtel and Telefonica for the provision of local, national long-distance and international services. The signing of the agreements followed weeks of lobbying and legal wrangling; a federal appeals court lifted a last minute injunction to permit Anatel to complete the deals. However, at the last minute the government added an amendment to the concessions to restrict telcos from producing and transmitting video content, which is the current right of TV companies.
