Russian mobile group Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has upped its stake in Chita regional cellco Sibintertelecom to 100% by purchasing the 6.47% of the company it did not already own from Sibirtelecom and a private shareholder for a combined USD2.8 million. MTS acquired its 93.5% stake in Sibintertelecom last month. The cellco provides GSM mobile services under the Sibi GSM brand in the Chita Region and Aginsk-Buryat Autonomous District with a combined population of 1.16 million people. As of November 30 Sibintertelecom’s subscriber base stood at 372,100.
Earlier this week MTS consolidated 100% of the shares of its North Ossetia regional subsidiary Telesot-Alania. MTS is looking to improve the group’s efficiency by simplifying its structure, and the integration of Telesot-Alania follows the earlier consolidation of numerous other wholly owned domestic subsidiaries, including Uraltel, Telecom XXI, Kuban-GSM, Digital Network of Udmurtia (DNU-900), Dontelecom, MTS-Barnaul, MTS-Nizhniy Novgorod (MTS-NN), Telecom-900 and Amur Cellular Communication (ACC).
