The chief executive of Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) Peter Kaliaropoulos, has announced that his company is cutting the cost of ADSL services for business users in half to help foster the take-up of advanced services. The move is part of a wider plan to focus on new technologies, including a multimillion investment into the Flag Telecom Falcon cable system, which will provide Bahraini customers with direct international connectivity to major cities and business hubs around the world. In addition, Mr Kaliaropoulos reiterated his company’s plans to invest BHD21 million (USD55.73 million) in its Broadband Bahrain programme which is designed to bring high speed access to the masses in the Kingdom. ‘Implementing this massive undertaking involves a complete overhaul of Batelco’s fixed network, changing it from what was primarily a narrowband capability to a broadband network capable of handling the quantities of data that today’s multi-media internet can deliver’, he said.
