Unicom to offer dual-mode handsets to reduce churn and lure China Mobile users

20 Dec 2005

China Unicom, the country’s second largest mobile operator, is introducing dual-mode GSM/CDMA handsets, to enable its users to switch seamlessly between its CDMA and GSM networks. In an attempt to bridge the technological gap between the two so-called ‘incompatible’ technologies, Unicom is ordering 100,000 of the new terminals in a bid to prevent GSM users from switching to another service provider and entice China Mobile’s GSM users to sign-up to its CDMA service. Unicom launched the dual-mode service in August under the brand name ‘World Wind’.
