Regulator calls halt to AXS intervention

20 Dec 2005

Bolivia’s telecoms regulator Sittel has called a temporary halt to its administrative intervention of beleaguered telco AES Communications (AXS), writes BNamericas. Sittel initiated its investigation into the operator in mid-October and said the intervention would last 90 days, however, it has now suspended the intercession in the wake of a government-backed plan designed to reinstate AXS’s economic viability. Nonetheless, the regulator has stopped short of removing the 11 January deadline for the operator’s liquidation, giving AXS just three weeks to pull off a last minute turnaround. Sittel has fined AXS USD163,000 for its failure to pay interconnection fees to Cochabamba-based local telephony cooperative Comteco.
