Pay-as-you-go customers forced to sign government register

20 Dec 2005

The Indonesian government is preparing to issue a decree ordering all pre-paid mobile phone users to register their identities by April 2006 or face having their phone numbers blocked. The ruling is aimed at preventing cellular phones being used in criminal activities or for the purpose of harassment or intimidation. The new policy was originally intended to be enforced in November, but the country’s network operators only indicated their technical readiness to implement the registration scheme last week.
