Cablecom enters mobile market via sunrise tie-up

20 Dec 2005

Switzerland’s largest cable operator Cablecom has entered into a strategic partnership with Swiss cellco TDC Switzerland (sunrise) to provide mobile phone services. The pair’s first joint offering – marketed as ‘Cablecom mobile powered by sunrise’ – is a pre-paid package costing an initial CHF40 which includes a SIM card with CHF30 call credit and a fixed rate tariff of CHF0.35 for all calls to domestic fixed line numbers. Calls to Swiss mobile networks are charged at CHF0.44 per minute and SMS messages cost CHF0.10 each until the middle of 2006; a post-paid service is set to follow in the next six months. The deal gives Cablecom a chance to offer mobile services to its existing ‘triple play’ voice, internet and TV customer base, while sunrise is aiming to benefit from the cableco’s sales and marketing resources to boost the number of users on its network. sunrise had 1.283 million subscribers at the end of September, ahead of Orange Communications with 1.19 million, but way behind Swisscom Mobil with 4.174 million.
