Malaysia’s second largest mobile operator Celcom has introduced a pre-paid option for 3G users. The Xpax 3G package targets the 80% of Celcom’s subscriber base already using a pre-paid service, and offers free web browsing for a promotional period until 15 February 2006. The move is seen as crucial to increase 3G usage amongst its younger customers and keep up competitive pressure on the country’s other 3G provider, Maxis Mobile. Celcom is aiming to sign up 40,000 3G subscribers by year’s end. It had a total of 6.341 million subscribers at the end of September, behind Maxis with 7.01 million; third placed DiGi Telecommunications had 4.187 million subs.
