3G subscriber growth not all it appears to be…

Taiwan’s 3G mobile market is not expanding at the pace that has publicly been claimed, according to local news reports. Whilst the country’s three biggest cellcos – Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone and Taiwan Mobile – claim to have together signed up around 450,000 3G subscribers between them, the Taiwan Economic News claims that less than 10% of those customers actually use a 3G handset; 27,000 for Chunghwa Telecom and 10,000 each for Far EasTone and Taiwan Cellular. It says that the remainder are using 3G SIM cards in their 2G handsets.
