Mexican-owned telco Telmex aims to roll out Chile’s first nationwide WiMAX network by the end of 2006, according to BNamericas. Telecoms regulator Subtel recently awarded Telmex Chile a nationwide wireless in the local loop (WiLL) licence alongside cable market leader VTR-Metrópolis. The concession comes with a commitment to deploy services covering 90% of the population within a year and Telmex plans to offer WiMAX-based services at ‘competitive prices’, focusing strongly on the SME sector and VoIP telephony. The telco has not yet announced investment figures for the WiMAX project, since the plan presented to Subtel was evaluated only in terms of coverage and population density. Meanwhile, VTR aims to deploy nationwide WiLL infrastructure in 2006 and to launch services simultaneously in all regions, targeting coverage of 3.4 million homes within five years.
