Russia’s largest cellco Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has teamed up with Moscow-based ISP Tascom to launch commercial Wi-Fi services via 60 hotspots in the country’s major cities. In total, Russia is expected to have more than 680 wireless internet access locations nationwide. The cellco says it plans to increase its number of hotspots to more than 300 in 2006.
Earlier this week MTS vice president for sales Mikhail Shamolin said that he expects the mobile operator’s customer base to pass the 60 million mark before the end of the year, of which 44 million will be in Russia. At the end of November MTS had 54 million users, including 41 million in its domestic market.
