Claro to sell cheap phones

15 Dec 2005

Brazilian mobile operator Claro has announced plans to sell mobile handsets for just BRL1 (USD0.44) in Minas Gerais, according to a report in local paper Gazeta Mercantil. Claro, which will offer phones by Motorola, Nokia and Siemens, hopes that the promotion will help it to boost its market share in the state. The cellco entered Minas Gerais in October, competing with Telemig, Oi and TIM, but its entry into the market was interrupted after just 21 days because of a cross-shareholding arrangement between it and Telemig which was deemed illegal. It received approval to re-enter Minas Gerais on 9 December.
