Telefónica’s EUR10bn broadband push

Telefónica of Spain says it is planning to invest EUR10 billion over the next five years to expand its broadband operations worldwide. The development will include both fixed and mobile broadband services. Telefónica has around 148 million customers globally, including 4.4 million high speed internet subscribers. The telco has invested EUR1.1 billion in its domestic broadband business this year and controls the bulk of the country’s five million high speed users. Telefónica also says it is on target to reach its target of having 200,000 ADSL TV subscribers in Spain by the end of the year. Its Imagenio service, which is based on ADSL 2+ technology, offers users 48 TV channels, 15 radio stations and a video-on-demand service.
