South African cellco Vodacom has launched the country’s first TV service for 3G mobile handsets under the Vodafone live! banner. Vodacom UMTS subscribers can access a number of TV channels from their phones, including E! Entertainment, Fashion TV, Yebo 1, Speedy, Telly Track, Chilli TV, BBC, and Yebo Millionaires. Vodacom is owned 50/50 by Vodafone of the UK and South Africa’s national PTO Telkom. It launched commercial UMTS services in Johannesburg, Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria, Durban and selected holiday areas in late December 2004, and plans to double its number of UMTS base stations to 900 by the end of this year.
