Japanese cellco NTT DoCoMo is currently negotiating the purchase of a stake in South Korean mobile operator KT Freetel (KTF). The Japanese operator has been looking to tap into the South Korean wireless market for some time, and this now looks set to become a reality. According to Reuters, DoCoMo is set to acquire a 10% stake in KTF for around JPY60 billion (USD500 million), although the Japanese cellco has declined to comment.
In a separate story, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association, shipments of mobile phones in Japan grew by 30.2% in October to 3.17 million units. Shipments of 3G phones grew 99.9% year-on-year to 2.38 million units, while 2G handsets dropped 41.5% to 670,000 units.
