Green boxes, green initiative

9 Dec 2005

An initiative has been launched by China’s largest cellular operator and two foreign equipment suppliers aimed at increasing mobile phone recycling. China Mobile, Nokia and Motorola have come together to introduce their ‘green box’ project, which is encouraging mobile users to dispose of unwanted handsets and accessories in boxes located in over 1,100 mobile phone shops around the country. Used mobile handsets and accessories, which can contain toxic substances such as lead, mercury, zinc and nickel, will be sent to factories where they will be dismantled and disposed of safely.
