29 Nov 2005

The Mexican telecoms regulator, the Federal Telecommunications Commission (Cofetel), reports that the country’s telecommunications industry grew at the fastest rate in five years in the three months ended 30 September 2005. Activity measured by Cofetel’s telecommunications production index expanded by 26.5% compared to the same period of 2004. Incoming phone traffic from the US contributed to most of the growth in the quarter, while mobile telephony also generated growth on the back of a 27.2% rise in subscribers to 44.6 million. The number of fixed lines grew by 8.5% to 19.2 million, although outgoing international voice traffic fell year-on-year.
