Anatel to sign new fixed line licences on 7 December

28 Nov 2005

Brazilian telecoms regulator Anatel has set 7 December as the date to sign new 20-year concession contracts with the country’s fixed line operators. The telcos’ current contracts were awarded in 1998 when former state monopoly Telebras was privatised, and are due to expire on 31 December. The new licences, which are scheduled to come into effect in January 2006, will be designed to offer greater benefits for consumers and to oblige operators to offer budget plans for low-income families.
