Algeria’s Ministry of Posts, IT and Communications (MPTIC) has reported an unexpectedly high increase in the country’s mobile phone users in September and October. According to the regulator, total cellular subscribers reached twelve million at the end of October, after 2.5 million were added in just two months. The figures reveal a rise of over seven million new customers in the first nine months of the year, up from 4.87 million at end-2004. Algeria is home to three mobile operators: Wataniya Telecom Algeria, which operates under the brand name Nedjma, Mobilis and Orascom Telecom Algeria (Djezzy GSM).
