Six Chinese carriers are reportedly co-operating on the construction of trial TD-SCDMA 3G networks in Beijing and Shanghai. Local press reports suggest that cellular operators China Mobile and China Unicom, fixed line operators China Telecom, China Netcom and China TieTong, plus satellite provider China Satcom are working together to test the technology which has been developed in China. The firms will begin installing base stations next month, as soon as equipment tests by manufacturers are completed. The Chinese government is expected to award four 3G concessions next year, with at least one of these to be a TD-SCDMA concession.
