According to local press reports, equipment supplier Motorola and mobile operator Oi are planning to launch a hybrid mobile phone in Brazil, which will offer services at the same tariff as a fixed line offering. The new handsets, which come with a small Bluetooth transmitter to redirect the signal to a fixed line network where necessary, will be launched on 5 December under the banner Oi Mix. They will be offered via a basic fixed line subscription fee for customers of Oi and Telemar.
In a separate story, Oi has said it does not want to enter into a price war this Christmas, according to CEO Luiz Eduardo Falco. Falco said the cellco will not sell heavily subsidized prepaid phones to attract users during the festive season but instead concentrate on retaining its existing customers.
