Chinese getting the message

China’s Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has reported a big leap in the popularity of SMS text messaging in the country over the past year. 246.6 billion messages were sent in the first ten months of 2005, up 40.1% on the same period last year. The MII also reports that revenues from telecoms and postal services in the ten-month period have risen 11.2% year-on-year to CNY528.44 billion (USD65.4 billion). Cellular penetration in China currently stands at 29.1%, while fixed line teledensity is 26.6%.
