State-run start-up eyes handset market

23 Nov 2005

Start-up Venezuelan personal computer manufacturer Empresa Venezolana de Industria Tecnológica (VIT) plans to enter the mobile handset market, according to BNamericas. VIT is a joint venture between the Venezuelan government and Chinese hardware firm Lang Chao, which was created earlier this year to design and build the country’s first so-called ‘people’s PC’. There are conflicting reports about whether the state-run company plans to manufacture GSM or CDMA-based phones.
