State prioritises WiMAX development; triples budget

The Taiwanese government is prioritising the rollout of WiMAX wireless broadband services and has more than tripled its budget for the development of the technology. The Executive Yuan, Taiwan’s cabinet, has upped next year’s budget for promoting WiMAX to TWD1.1 billion (USD33 million) from the TWD300 million originally earmarked, amid worries that the island’s technology developers will get left behind. Taiwan’s telecom equipment market is currently dominated by overseas companies and the state hopes that the development of WiMAX can help local developers claw back market share.
