Riyadh questions appeal of second fixed line licence

15 Nov 2005

The governor of the Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission, Mohammed al-Suwaiyel, has warned the government that interest in the forthcoming second national fixed line concession could be low given the industry’s preference for wireless communications. Earlier this year the governor announced plans to award a competitive wireline licence by the end of 2006, ending the long standing monopoly of Saudi Telecommunications Corp (STC). Suwaiyel also confirmed that a third wireless concession is scheduled to be awarded in September 2006, to bring further competition to STC and newcomer Mobily, which launched in May.
