Brasil Telecom has reported 900,000 broadband subscribers at the end of October 2005, up 95% year-on-year. The telco competes with Telefonica subsidiary Speedy in the broadband arena, which claimed 1.1 million customers at the same date. Earlier this month Telefonica revealed plans to invest BRL60 million (USD27 million) in its network to market a faster service. Brasil Telecom, which posted a loss of BRL25.1 million (USD11.1 million) in the third quarter thanks to falling fixed line revenues, plans to market a VoIP service on 1 December. It hopes to have signed up 180,000 VoIP customers by the end of 2006.
