The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has received bids for the country’s third 3G licence from three companies. Mobile operator DiGi Telecommunications, pay-TV operator MiTV Corp and domestic telco TIMEdotCom have all made applications, and the MCMC expects to decide on a winner by February 2006.
Meanwhile, Telekom Malaysia’s mobile unit Celcom has announced that it will launch the country’s first pre-paid 3G service next month as part of its efforts to boost take-up of high speed data services. Celcom says it currently has 15,000 3G subscribers and hopes to increase this figure by 3,000 within a month of introducing the pre-paid option.
