HKBN announces VoIP upgrade

Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN), a wholly owned subsidiary of City Telecom (HK), has announced plans for a major upgrade of its VoIP network using equipment supplied by Nortel. The broadband service, offered under the banner 2b, allows voice, video and multimedia services to be delivered on a single network, making for a more efficient and cost-effective use of its network. HKBN is in the process of expanding its metro ethernet from 1.2 million to 1.8 million homes passed, giving it coverage of 80% of the total population. The operator has achieved an aggregate voice, broadband (symmetric 1000Mbps, 100Mbps and 10Mbps), IP-TV and corporate data service base in excess of 600,000 subscriptions.
