Government plans to re-auction mobile licence while Digicel’s customer base soars

10 Nov 2005

According to local press reports, the Jamaican government has revealed plans to re-auction the country’s fourth mobile licence, after having confiscated it from Cingular Wireless earlier this year when the US-based company agreed to sell its Caribbean assets to Digicel. The auction is expected to be coordinated by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Spectrum Management Authority and the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR), and will take place over the next 30 days.

In a separate story Digicel has reported that it gained 24,000 new subscribers in Jamaica during October 2005 to take its total customer base to 1.376 million at the end of the month. The company attributed the growth to improved customer services and promotional schemes which helped it to win new users. Digicel launched GSM operations in Jamaica in April 2001. It also operates in seven other Caribbean countries.
