Nortel completes Vivo’s 1x expansion; Claro to enter Minas Gerais

3 Nov 2005

Nortel Networks has completed an expansion of the CDMA2000 1x and 1x EV-DO wireless broadband solutions of Brazilian mobile operator Brasilcel, which operates under the banner Vivo. The expansion has increased the coverage of the cellco’s 3G network in the north, south and centre-west regions of Brazil.

Meanwhile rival operator Claro is set to enter Minas Gerais state, a move which will increase its coverage to 21 states. The cellco hopes to attract subscribers by offering attractive promotions such as a payment of BRL1,200 for each new prepaid customer that accumulates BRL100 of monthly calls between two Claro phones.
