China to build and launch Venezuela telecoms satellite

2 Nov 2005

The Venezuelan government has agreed to buy a satellite from China with the aim of making the country’s telecoms sector ‘self-sufficient’. The orbiter, to be known as the ‘Simon Bolivar Satellite’ in recognition of the South American country’s independence hero, will be launched from China in 2008. China will oversee its construction and its placement into orbit with the participation of Venezuelan personnel, the Ministry of Science and Technology said in a statement.
