Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom added 175,000 new ADSL subscribers in the third quarter to take its total broadband customer base to 3.5 million. The telco also had about 500,000 dial-up subscribers at the end of September 2005, giving it a total internet user base of around four million. Chunghwa’s number of fixed lines in service increased 0.4% year-on-year to 13.3 million, whilst mobile users decreased 2.1% to 8.1 million. There would have been an increase in wireless customers were it not for a purge of inactive pre-paid users from its records. Chunghwa also currently has around 265,000 3G subscribers. Earlier this month Chunghwa reported a 2.5% drop in its third quarter net profit, despite a small increase in sales. Net profit for the three months to the end of September 2005 was TWD38.3 billion (USD1.15 billion), down from TWD39.28 billion in the corresponding period of 2004. Revenues rose from TWD136.75 billion to TWD136.9 billion, boosted by a strong performance in September when sales rose 3.8% year-on-year.
