Increased competition and network expansion has seen the number of mobile phone users in Uruguay increase 48% since the start of the year to reach 900,000, according to BNamericas, quoting state-owned operator Antel. Antel’s wireless subsidiary Ancel, had close to 510,000 subscribers at the end of September, whilst its main rival Movicom, bought by the Telefónica Móviles Group in October 2004, had around 300,000. Uruguay’s newest mobile market entrant, CTI Móvil, has witnessed a rapid increase in subscribers since it completed the rollout of its nationwide GSM/GPRS network in June; the América Móvil subsidiary ended September with around 110,000 users, up from just 6,000 at the start of the year.
