25 Oct 2005

South African mobile operator Vodacom says its customer base has passed the 16 million mark and has made bold predictions of continued growth despite warnings that the market is rapidly reaching saturation levels. ‘We believe that should current business models remain in place, the market will continue to grow, ultimately reaching 40 million subscribers in the next three to five years, representing a penetration rate approaching 90%,’ Alan Knott-Craig, Vodacom’s CEO, said in a statement. He added that the number of mobile users in South Africa currently stood at 27 million, giving Vodacom a market share of around 59%, up from 57% at the end of June.
