Mobile growth continues

China’s two state-backed mobile phone operators added 14.7 million subscribers between them in the third quarter, taking the country’s total cellular customer base to almost 360 million. The largest operator, China Mobile, saw subscriber numbers rise 5% from 223.78 million at the end of June to 234.88 million three months later. 74% of its users are connected via pre-paid packages. Its only rival in the market, China Unicom, reported subscriber growth of 3% over the quarter, ending September with 124.15 million customers, with 40% of these pre-paid users.
