VSNL eyes 1Q06 FWA launch

Indian telecoms giant Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) is finalising its plans to launch fixed wireless access (FWA) telephony services in South Africa in the first quarter of 2006. ‘We will roll out our telephony services in South Africa by the first quarter of next year, operated through a special purpose vehicle – Strategic Equity Partner Company (SepCo),’ VSNL chairman Subodh Bhargava told the Business Standard. VSNL’s Indian parent Tata Group is a strategic equity partner in South Africa’s second national operator (SNO), which plans to launch services before Christmas.
