Moscow-based start-up operator Start Telecom and German vendor Siemens have signed an agreement to develop Russia’s first WiMAX network based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard. Under the contract Siemens will provide Start Telecom with its complete SkyMAX network solution including base stations and end devices as well as its NetViewer monitoring and control system. Start Telecom will carry out testing of the network in Moscow and plans to offer commercial WiMAX services in the city in 2006. Start Telecom was created in the third quarter of 2004 and holds licences to provide local telephony and data services in the 3.5GHz and 5.8GHz bands. It plans to offer telephony, internet and virtual private network (VPN) services via WiMAX at speeds of up to 75 Mbps.
