NTC gives TOT and CAT the 3G OK

19 Oct 2005

Thailand’s National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has bowed to pressure from the country’s state-run incumbent operators TOT Corp and CAT Telecom and handed the pair 3G operating licences. TOT and CAT had been upset that the new concessions they were given in August did not allow them to roll out UMTS networks, and both claim that the launch of 3G services is vital to them remaining competitive in the country’s liberalised market. TOT currently provides GSM based wireless services via its Thai Mobile subsidiary, whilst CAT has a stake in CDMA operator Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia. The NTC is currently drafting legislation outlining the requirements for the development of 3G services and expects to publish the regulations by the end of the year.
