T-Mobile Slovakia launches Flash-OFDM wireless broadband

18 Oct 2005

T-Mobile Slovakia and Siemens yesterday launched a nationwide wireless broadband network in the 450MHz band based on Flash-OFDM technology, to compete with rival platforms using Wi-Fi, WiMAX and 3G. At launch the new service is available in the capital Bratislava and 19 other cities; subscribers signing up to the service can opt for either a mobile or fixed installation – accessed through base station transmitters, desktop modems and PC cards – offering transmission speeds of 1Mbps/256kbps (downstream/upstream). T-Mobile Slovakia hopes the launch of wireless broadband services will increase penetration in a country poorly served by wireline alternatives. Flash-OFDM is a proprietary system created by Flarion, which is in the process of being acquired by Qualcomm.
