South Korea’s second largest mobile phone maker Pantech has signed a contract with Mexico-based wireless group América Móvil (AM) for the supply of half a million handsets in the Latin American region. Under the deal, the Korean manufacturer will supply 300,000 units to AM’s Mexican subsidiary Telcel and deliver a further 200,000 in Argentina and Colombia. The shipments of Pantech’s PG-1410 ‘candy bar’ style phone, which features a VGA camera, FM radio, colour display, MP3 ringtones and speakerphone, will be completed by the end of this year. Pantech entered the Mexican market in 2004 thanks to the signing of a partnership agreement with Telcel. It expects to sell around 1.7 million phones in Mexico this year generating turnover of USD200 million, and anticipates growth of 30% in 2006 thanks in part to increased sales from Colombia and Argentina.
