14 Oct 2005

Movilnet, the Venezuelan cellco owned by national PTO CANTV, has announced plans to invest a further USD25 million in the expansion of its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO wireless network, saying it hopes to cover all municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants next year. Movilnet launched CDMA2000 1x services in November 2002 over a network consisting of 450 cell sites. It launched CDMA2000 1x EV-DO services commercially earlier this year and plans to invest around USD230 million in new technologies by the end of 2007, including USD200 million to fund a 45% increase in the number of EV-DO radio base stations; the cellco currently has coverage of around 95% of the population and last month expanded the EV-DO network to the Paraguachón region, covering the town of Guarero in the Páez municipality near the Colombian border.
