ntl contracts Alcatel for metro network

13 Oct 2005

UK cable operator ntl has contracted Alcatel to build it a Metro Ethernet Transport Network to extend the reach of its corporate Ethernet services to more than 260 points of presence. Alcatel will deliver a complete solution, based on its 7450 Ethernet Service Switch and 5620 Service Aware Manager, to expand ntl’s national Ethernet, MPLS, IP and VPN services to businesses nationwide. In addition the French vendor will aggregate ntl’s other Ethernet-based products and services, such as video-on-demand, digital television, and cable and DSL modem traffic.

Earlier this month ntl and rival Telewest announced the terms of their long anticipated merger. The pair are seeking to team up against the might of BSkyB in the pay-TV sector and have signed a deal which will see ntl taking over Telewest, the smaller of the two, and merging it into its own operations.
