Alcatel ready for WiMAX trial

12 Oct 2005

The French equipment supplier Alcatel has signed a deal which will see it trialling WiMAX wireless broadband systems in Norway. Alcatel has been contracted by NextGenTel to conduct field trials of WiMAX technology in Oslo and Bergen. WiMAX provides wide-area broadband connectivity at a range of up to 20km from each base station, offering operators a relatively quick and cost-effective rollout in regions not covered by wireline broadband technologies such as DSL or cable, or in areas where access to the last-mile connection is economically prohibitive. Bergen-based NextGenTel has acquired around one-third of all available WiMAX concessions in Norway.
