PT continues to leak market share

11 Oct 2005

Portugal’s telecoms regulator the Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações (ANACOM) has published official data confirming that former monopoly Portugal Telecom (PT) continued to lose market share in the voice traffic segment in the three months to 30 September 2005. Telecom.paper writes that the incumbent saw a drop in its share of both total minutes (down 1% quarter-on-quarter to 74.9%) and volume of calls (down 1.1% at 74.8%) in the period, while the number of fixed line customers signed up to PT fell marginally by 0.1% to around 3.14 million. By contrast, alternative operators, including CATV providers offering voice telephony and internet access, increased their share of the market, leaving the former monopoly with 92.9% of all direct connections at the end of June 2005 down 0.6% on the previous quarter.
