Mobile lines finally dry up for ICE

5 Oct 2005

Costa Rican telecoms monopoly ICE has sold the last batch of 3,000 reclaimed TDMA mobile lines on a first-come, first-served basis, leaving frustrated would-be customers empty-handed and having to wait until later this year when Ericsson makes available the first of the 600,000 new GSM lines it is installing for the operator. Costa Rica completely ran out of mobile connections at the end of 2004 and ICE has sold off several batches of delinquent accounts this year in an attempt to meet pent-up demand. The new lines were due to be installed this month, but ICE has been forced to push back the official launch due to problems in obtaining plots of land for the construction of nine radio towers.
