3 Oct 2005

Mexican domestic long-distance telecom operator Marcatel has launched a local voice telephony service in the city of Monterrey. It plans to launch a similar service in Mexico City and Guadalajara at the start of 2006, before expanding the offering to Querétaro, Guanajuato and León. The company’s local service, branded Conexión 21, is delivered over an IP-based platform and it hopes to pick up a market share of 5% in the next two to three years. Marcatel says it is looking to focus on the residential market and aims to offer triple play services of cable TV, internet access and voice telephony through agreements with local cable TV operators.
