29 Sep 2005

The world’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, China Mobile, has selected Nortel Networks to expand its GSM network in six regions of the country under a string of contracts awarded to the vendor this year, thought to be worth a combined USD150 million. The expansion will support the cellco’s National Rural Network Project in the northern and western provinces of Hebei, Shaanxi and Liaoning, the municipality of Tianjin, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and the eastern province of Hunan. Nortel will increase subscriber capacity in those areas by 3.48 million to approximately 18 million, and deliver improvements in coverage and services in remote areas. The agreements also include the delivery of Nortel network optimisation services to streamline performance of the expanded infrastructure and enhance network productivity, and provide a smooth upgrade path to 3G.
